Take Valentine's Tilt In Selkirk

The Portage Terriers picked up a
key divisional victory in
Steeltown last night.
The Dogs were in Selkirk for
their seventh meeting of the
season with the
Steelers. It didn't take
long for the visitors to find
the scoreboard. Just 4:21 into
the first period, Brendan Harms
dangled his way past the defense
and roofed his 17th of the
season past Adam Harris, giving
Portage the early advantage.
It stayed 1-0 until the 12:13
mark of the second when the
Steelers struck on the powerplay.
Parker Thomas buried his 24th of
the season, knotting things up
and giving the Selkirk fans
something to cheer about.

For Steinbach

Brent Wold (#16) has been
money against the Pistons this season. In six games,
the Lac du Bonnet product has four goals and seven
assists.
The
Portage Terriers return to the ice tonight, facing
off with the Steinbach Pistons in one of three games
on the MJHL schedule.
Tonight's tilt will be the seventh meeting of the
season between the Addison Division rivals with
Portage claiming five of the first six. Leading the
way in the season series is Eastman alum Brent Wold.
The 18-year-old centre has four goals and seven
assists against the Pistons this season. Despite
missing three of the six meetings due to injury,
linemate Brendan Harms has also put up impressive
numbers against his hometown club. The crafty
youngster has potted two goals and added five
assists in three games against Steinbach.

In the MJHL, Portage Terriers were back on the ice
for practice yesterday, looking to clear their minds
of their recent losing streak. The club has dropped
three straight games and seen their lead in the
Addison Division standings lead cut to just two
points. Head Coach and General Manager Blake Spiller
says the team has gotten away from their game over
the last week.

The Portage
Terriers held on for as long as they could, but were
downed by the Winnipeg Blues 4-3 in overtime in
Manitoba Junior Hockey League play.
Terriers Defenceman Justin Slobozian scored twice in
the first to tie up the game 2-2, but finished the
game in the dressing room after receiving a 5 minute
fighting major, 2 minutes for instigating and a 10
minute game misconduct with two and a half minutes
left in the third period. >

The Portage Terriers are gearing up for a busy
weekend as they kick off a six-game road trip in the
Manitoba Junior Hockey League tonight.
The club heads to Swan River tonight before a trip
to the Opaskwayak Cree Nation on Saturday. After
going 6-1 in their first seven games of 2012, the
team is feeling good about their chances. Defenseman
Connor Faupel says they're expecting a couple of
rough games as they head up north.

Streak Snapped At Six

The Terriers fell 3-2 to the Winnipeg Blues, ending
their six-game winning streak.
The
Portage Terriers fell short in their bid for seven
straight victories last night.
The club dropped a 3-2 decision to the Winnipeg
Blues at the PCU Centre, losing for the first time
in 2012. The Blues got out of the gate quickly,
getting a goal from Warren Callis just 12 seconds
into the game. The Terriers responded just over a
minute later when Brendon Fornwald found Brandon
Lauder in front and the young forward snapped his 8th of the
season to the back of the net.

Centre.
The Portage Terriers battled penalty trouble, the
injury bug and the top team in the Sher-Wood
Division on Sunday evening and still found a way to
walk out with a win.

Pesky Pistons

The Portage Terriers are still undefeated in the new
year after a back and forth affair with the
Steinbach Pistons last night.
The club started things off on the right foot,
getting powerplay goals from Mike Gemmill and Cody
Kostecki and an even-strength marker from Riley Hay
to end the first period up 3-0.
The Pistons came out firing in the second though,
striking on a pair of powerplays themselves. Kurt
Johnas and Trent Genyk provided the offense as
Steinbach pulled to within a goal, making it 3-2
headed for the third.

New Terrier Brett
Fargher (#7) made his debut with the club alongside
fellow deadline acquisition Adam Restoule.
The
Portage Terriers kept their winning ways going last
night, beating the Blues in Headingley's MTS IcePlex. The Dogs
got things started early in the first when Mike
Gemmill buried a slap shot on the powerplay, beating
Byron Spriggs on the glove side. Gemmill
struck again on the powerplay in the second period,
converting a sweet pass from Brendan Harms to make
it a 2-0 Terrier lead. Just over three minutes
later, Jared Morris put the Blues on the board with
a shot in the slot that got past Shea Cooper. The
Dogs restored the two goal lead just over a minute
later when a pinching Justin Slobozian found the
back of the net for his first goal of the year.

Three In A Row

The Portage Terriers are 3 and 0 in 2012. Defeating
the Winkler Flyers in a home and home stand 5-0 and
5-2 respectively and last night's 5-2 victory over
the Selkirk Steelers. The Steelers got the scoring
started off of a badly played puck behind the net by
Terriers Goaltender Shea Cooper but The Dogs
answered back quickly off the stick of rookie
Forward Dylan Butler. Kajon McKay was able to draw
a penalty battling one on one and also a penalty
shot on the same play, scoring the second goal for
the Terriers. The Dogs didn't look back scoring
again two more times even strength to take a
comfortable 4-1 lead before the Steelers could
answer back on the powerplay. The Terriers only
needed 3 seconds on the powerplay to score with
Tanner Waldvogel putting the puck in the net right
off the draw.

The Terriers played host to the Winkler
Flyers last night, in front of 748 fans at the PCU Centre.
The Portage Terriers made sure
2012 started with a bang.
The club shut down the visiting Winkler Flyers 5-0, earning
just their second win in five tries against the Orange and
Black. Mike Gemmill led the way with a pair of goals while
singles came from Tyler Larson, Brendan Harms and Dylan
Butler. Harms and Butler also got their names close to
record territory when their goals came just five seconds
apart. Gemmill's game was a big one as well. After being
moved to the Wold/Harms line midway through the first, the
Stonewall native potted a pair of goals and added an assist.
Gemmill says playing with the two young snipers is a treat.

The Natives are back in the PCU Centre
for the first time since the season
opener.
The Portage Terriers are back in action
this afternoon in their annual New
Year's Eve tilt.
The team will be on home ice as they
welcome their Highway 16 rivals, the
Neepawa Natives, to the PCU Centre. Both
teams are looking to build some momentum
heading into the season's second half
and come back strong from the Christmas
break. Terrier forward Brent Wold says
it may take some time for the team to
get back to their high-level of play.
"The first period's gonna be kinda just
feeling out each other," says Wold. "I
think everyone's gonna be ready and
gonna be excited just to get playing
again. I think it's gonna be a pretty
good game."

Victorious In Huge Comeback Win

The Portage
Terriers celebrate the game winning goal scored on
the powerplay by Forward Tyler Larson.
The Portage Terriers roared back from a 4-1 deficit
to defeat the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in MJHL
action at the PCU Centre in Portage la Prairie.
Behind 4-1 in the middle of the second period,
Portage Terriers Captain Andrew Wiebe was able to
complete the hat trick he started in the second
stanza by getting the Terriers on the board, adding
two more goals just over two minutes apart.
Wolverines Forward Ashley Howie already had a hat
trick of his own before Wiebe got his first goal of
the game. Another goal from Terriers Forward
Brendan Harms on the powerplay tied it up 4-4 going
into the third period.

Terriers Open Weekend With A Loss

It wasn't the start to a busy weekend the
Portage Terriers were looking for. The club was in
The Pas last night, paying their first visit to the
Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre, the home of the OCN
Blizzard. It didn't take long for the Blizz to
welcome the Dogs to town. Just 10 seconds into the
game, Denis Restoule beat Shea Cooper to put OCN on
top. Portage tied things up less than a minute later
when Brendan Harms notched his 7th of the season.
The Blizzard jumped right back on top at the 4:48
mark of the first with a goal from Ralph Cochrane
but before the first was over, Kajon McKay picked up
the equalizer, sending the teams into intermission
in a 2-2 deadlock.

The Portage Terriers were in Steinbach last night,
taking on the last-place Pistons.
The
Portage Terriers found their offensive stroke in a
fast-paced third period last night and it led them
to a big victory.
The club was in Steinbach for a date with the
Pistons and it was the Dogs who got things
started. At the 13:03 mark of the first, Tyler
Larson buried a powerplay goal to give Portage the
early lead.

rivalry.
The Portage Terriers are back atop the Addison
Division today after an impressive victory against
the Dauphin Kings at the PCU Centre last night.
The Dogs played host to their former Sher-Wood
Division rivals just eight days after losing 5-2 to
the Kings in Dauphin. Once again, it was the
Kings
who got things started. Just 2:23 into the game,
Tanner Butler caught Portage netminder Shea Cooper
by surprise, potting the early goal to give the
visitors the edge.

The Portage Terriers have a big weekend ahead of
them in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
The club plays host to the Sher-Wood Division
leading Dauphin Kings on Saturday night before a
date with the Saints on Sunday. With the Blues win
last night over the Steinbach Pistons, the Dogs are
again in second place in the Addison Division, just
a point back of Winnipeg. Portage does have four
games in hand. The Terriers are coming off a 5-0
victory over the Blues in their last game and
defenseman Cody Kostecki says it was a big
confidence booster.
"After a big win like that, we all got our
confidence up," notes the Thunder Bay native. "We're
feeling good going into tomorrow. We had a good
practice out there and hoping for the best
tomorrow."

Terriers grabbed first place in the Addison Division
with a big win over the Blues last night.
The Portage
Terriers shut down the visiting Winnipeg Blues last
night, jumping into first place in the Addison
Division along the way.
The Dogs got on the board early when Kajon McKay
broke in alone short-handed and back-handed his 10th
of the season past Byron Spriggs. An Andrew Wiebe
marker just 1:28 later made the lead 2-0 and the
Terriers carried
that into the intermission. The Dogs added to it in
the second with a powerplay goal from Dylan Butler
and an even-strength marker from Brent Wold. Wold
added another in the third and Shea Cooper shut the
door, guiding the Terriers to the 5-0 victory.

The proverbial circus came to the PCU Centre on
Sunday night, but the Portage Terriers didn't even
let the first tent pole for the big top get set up.
The Terriers (18-6-1) blasted the visiting Swan
Valley Stampeders 6-0 in the return of Swan Valley
forward Jesse Enns to the lineup.
Shaquille Merasty scored twice, while Cody Nelson,
Brandon Lauder, Kajon McKay and Dylan Butler also
lit the lamp for Portage. Tanner Waldvogel chipped
in a pair of assists.
Shea Cooper made 16 saves in the Terrier net to get
the shutout, while Alcide Grenier stopped 19 for
Swan Valley.
It was the second big win of the weekend for
Portage, who got past the league-leading Winnipeg
Blues 5-3 on Saturday night. Kajon McKay and Andrew
Wiebe each had a pair of goals, while Lauder had the
other. Adam Iwan made 23 saves for Portage, while

The young guns came up big for the
Portage Terriers on Sunday night.
Dylan Butler had a goal in regulation before adding
one in the shootout, Riley Hay got the third-period
equalizer and Yvan Pattyn had the shootout winner as
the Terriers (15-4-1) defeated the visiting
Waywayseecappo Wolverines 3-2.
Stephane Robidoux and Shane Goodrunning responded
for the Wolverines (10-8-2), who had leads of 1-0
and 2-1 before relinquishing in extra time.
Shea Cooper made 36 saves for the Terriers, while
Cory Simmons came up with 32 for the Wolverines.

Terriers
help out in effort to find Scamper

The Portage Terriers showed their community
involvement on the weekend by helping out in an
effort to find the lost dog of an elderly Portage la
Prairie man.
Basil Rowley's dog
Scamper has been missing since the latter part of
October after it was staying at a farm house in the
Gainsborough area, southeast of Portage, while
Rowley was in hospital for treatment.
Paul Harland,
assistant coach with the Terriers, said some people
in the team remember seeing Rowley out walking with
Scamper on many occasions and wanted to help where
they could.

The Selkirk Steelers may have forgotten about Shaq, and they
paid for it.
The hulking winger didn't play when his Portage Terriers met
the Selkirk Steelers on Friday night as he began serving a
two-game suspension, but Merasty returned with a vengeance
Tuesday night, racking up a hat trick, including the
empty-net winner, as the Terriers pulled out a 5-4 win at
the PCU Centre.
With the win, the Terriers (13-4-1) climbed to within a
point of second-place Winkler, while the Steelers fell to
9-8-1.
Portage also got goals from Mike Gemmill and Tanner
Waldvogel, while Justin Slobozian had a two-assist night.

After giving the Winkler
Flyers their first loss of the season, the Portage
Terriers were hoping to continue the streak. A
lackluster 1st period by the dawgs allowed the Saints to
go into the 2nd with a 3-0 lead. The terriers found
their feet and slowly chipped away with Shaq Merasty
notching one in the 2nd, and Cody Kostecki getting his
first goal of the Season in the 3rd.
A Late push by the terriers gave their fans at the PCU
center an exciting end with the terriers pulling their
tender for the last 6 seconds of the game unfortunately
not being able to capitalize on the extra allowing the
saints to travel down the #1 home with a win.
Next action for the dawgs is this sunday at the PCU
center. Game time 6:30

Terriers swing deal

Terriers exchanged young forwards with the Steinbach Pistons
on Thursday, sending 17-year-old Derek Loeppky east in

Terriers 4 – Flyers 0
The Terriers bounced back and gave
the Winkler Flyers their 1st loss of the season defeating
the Flyers 4 -0. A well rounded effort by the entire team
with goals from Merasty, Waldvogal, Gemmill and Wold scored
for the dogs. Shea Cooper was the CFRY player of the game
tonight with his first shut out of the season. With shots on
net Portage 32 – Winkler 33

Winnipeg 6 - Portage 1
The Terriers struggle in a 6-1 loss to the visiting
Winnipeg Blues at the PCU Centre Sunday night.
Portage had its chances in the first half of the
contest with the teams trading goals midway through
the second period, as Jake Heisinger opened it up
for Winnipeg and Shaq Merasty replied with a
short-handed marker, it was all Blues.Jared Morris and Kurt Keats each scored twice, while
Dylan Kelly also scored for Winnipeg
Shea Cooper made 19 saves for the Terriers, while
Blues turned in 22.The Terriers travel to face the league leader
Winkler Flyers on Tuesday night. Then home Friday
night when the Winnipeg Saints. 7:30 p.m.
