Terriers Best Blues

Terriers hold the Blues to 19 shots and Aiken stops 18 for the win. After losing to the Winnipeg Blues in a shootout on Sunday, they came back to beat them 6-1 at Stride Place last night. Ty Enns scored the lone goal of the first frame as he buried a bullet on the powerplay at 14:35 for a 1-0 Terrier lead. "The first ten, for whatever reason, we weren't ready to go. After we had the timeout, we got the boys going," said Assistant Coach, Paul Harland. "They played with more energy and desire after that and when we're moving our feet and skating, good things will happen for us." 3:19 in to the 2nd, Prouty beat Aiken to tie the game at one. A few minutes later, Blues’ captain Geordie Keane took a 5 minute boarding penalty and was ejected from the game. The Terriers received a couple minors, but they were then able to capitalize on the man advantage and score two, Martin and Barnstable for a 3-1 lead. Portage kept it going in the third scoring 3 goals in the second half, Kochanski picking up his first and second of the year. Aiken picked up the win in net stopping 18 shots. The Terriers head to Steinbach on Friday for their 5th meeting with the league leading Pistons this season. Portage will be looking for their first win. Accolades Prior to the start of the game, the Liquor and Lotteries IMPACT Player of the month was awarded to James McIsaac for the month of January. James scored 6 goals and earned 6 assists as well as an invite to the CJHL Prospects game. Congratulations James!

Blues win in the shoot out

Portage came to play in the first owning the period with 14 shots, but were unable to score, including 3 powerplay opportunities. With the :31 seconds left in the first Tulik puts one past Aiken on a scramble in front for the 1-0 lead. 2:40 into the second, McIsaac scored against his old team on a nice dish from Jeremey Leipsic. Three minutes later Barnstable would give the Terriers their first lead of the game scoring on an Enns pass from the boards. The lead was short lived however as former Terrier Captain Adam Wowryk tied the game at 2 with a powerplay goal. Just over halfway through the 3rd, Brock Aiken robbed Blues forward Ethan Sutherland to keep the game tied. Then Chase Brakel excited the crowd as he regained the lead for Portage potting a Leipsic pass with 5 to go in the third. Again Wowryk came up big for Winnipeg as he scored his second of the night just 40 seconds later to once again tie the game. Regulation and overtime would end in a 3-3 tie and the game headed to a shoot out. The Terriers shot first with Brakel not able to find the back of the net while Blues forward Rhett Lough scored on their first attempt. Barnstable was up next for the dogs and hit the post while Aiken made a great save on Wowryk at the other end. Do or die for the Terriers McIsaac came up big to even the shootout at one. Another former Terrier Dexter Kuczek put the game away scoring top corner for the win. "I thought we had some opportunities (in the first) where there were some loose pucks that we just maybe didn't battle hard enough for," says Terriers' assistant coach Paul Harland. "It was kind of one of those back-and-forth games a little bit, and we didn't seem to have as much jump as we did in Dauphin the other night. We got up 3-2 and we should've been able to close it out. We would've like to get the extra point here, it's going to be a battle down the stretch and every point is important. I think if we're skating and playing our game we have a chance to get two points against anyone. So if we can bring more energy on Wednesday I like our chances." Both teams are back at it on Wednesday in Portage, game time 7:30pm. It’s another Wild Wednesday at Stride Place, Bogo on walk up tickets, $3.25 beverages, $2.00 hot dogs and $1.00 fries. Come on out and bring a friend!

Terriers dominate in Dauphin

Barnstable buries his first of two on the breakaway. The Terriers dominated the Kings in Dauphin last night outshooting them 42-23 and finding the back of the net 7 times. Halfway through the first, Enns opened the scoring on the powerplay burying a one timer. Enns doubled up the Terriers lead at 17:27 beating McGovern on the powerplay again. Barnstable scored a shorthanded goal just before the period expired as he intercepted a pass and scored on the breakaway. Briscoe got the Kings on the board early in the second, but Brakel quickly re-established the 3 goal lead scoring his first of the game from the slot. Barnstable and Brakel would both score their 2nd of the night in the second for a 6-1 Portage lead heading in to the final frame. Briscoe scored his second of the game and Leipsic picked up the Terriers 7th for a 7-1 final score in Portage and Dauphin’s final meeting of the season. Aiken picks up the win with 21 saves on the night. The Terriers are back on the ice at Stride Place Sunday night, welcoming the Winnipeg Blues at 6:30pm

Pistons defeat Terriers

It was a rough start for the Terriers last night as Steinbach jumped out to an early lead. Hinson found the back of the net with a rebound, just 1:57 into the game. McConnell added one of his own at 6:35 also potting a rebound. Mackenzie Graham scored from the slot a little over a minute later for a 3 goal Piston’s lead just 8 minutes into the first. Although it was a better second half for the dogs, Steinbach held their lead and outshot Portage 9-4. The Terriers came out in the second ready and controlled much of the play. Chase Brakel scored the only Terrier goal of the game as he tipped a point shot from Dwyer to beat Radomsky to cut the lead to 2, but not for long. Carlson beat Aiken high with a backhand on the powerplay. The frame ended with Steinbach ahead 4-1. Portage tried to get things going early in the 3rd when Carlson took a minor for closing his hand on the puck, but struggled around the net. They then went on to take 10 minutes in penalties of their own which made their comeback less likely. Carlson scored his second of the game on the powerplay at 9:55 for a 5-1 Steinbach final. Aiken records the loss with 25 saves. The Terriers are on the road Friday to Dauphin where they face the Kings for the last time this season. Tune in to CFRY, game time 7:30pm.

Terriers split the weekend

The Terriers welcomed the Stampeders to the PCU Saturday night for their 5th meeting of the regular season. After losing back to back games in Swan in early December, the Dogs were looking for redemption. Swan got the jump on Portage with an early goal just 1:45 into the frame. Barnstable would even things out on the powerplay with Sokoloski securing the lead at 15:53 going top shelf on a partial breakaway. The Terriers led after 20 minutes outshooting the Stamps 12-5. The second was all Terriers as McIsaac, Barnstable and Leipsic all scored for Portage to have a commanding 4 goal lead after 40 minutes. Just passed the halfway point of the 3rd, Ellingsen found the back of the net for Swan, but the Terriers potted two more – McIsaac and Enns to run away with the game in a 7-2 final. McIsaac finished the night with 5 points and Aiken made 13 saves to pick up the win. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking to win their 3rd in a row Portage was on the road Sunday for their first game of the season in Wayway. Portage was off to a great start as Ryan Hendrix opened the scoring 2:13 in to the first period. They carried the one goal lead in to the dressing after 20 minutes. Martin and Cochrane each found the back of the net for the Wolverines by 4:17 of the second to go up 2-1 on Portage. Portage fought back with Brakel burying on the powerplay to tie the game and Enns finishing a McIsaac drop pass to go up by one. In a game of back and forth, Wayway took advantage of the 2 on 1 with Cochrane scoring his second of the night on Klassen to tie the game at 3. Leipsic leveraged the lead once again beating Lorenson on the powerplay. But it was all Wayway in the 3rd with Shewchuk tying the game at 4, the former Terrier Brandon Stanley pots the game winner unassisted as well at the insurance empty netter for the 6-4 Wayway final. Justin Klassen makes 16 saves in the loss for Portage. The Terriers are back on the ice this Wednesday at the PCU centre when they welcome the Steinbach Pistons. It’s Wild Wednesday where walk up tickets are 2 for 1, drinks are $3.25, hot dogs $2 and small fries $1.00. Wednesday’s game sponsor is Southport Rec!

Terriers with the win over OCN

Terriers faced off against the Blizzard last night at the PCU in a make up game from a game earlier in the season that was postponed due to weather. James McIsaac scores the empty netter and the Terriers hung on for the 4-2 victory over OCN at the PCU Centre last night. Portage came out strong in the first finishing checks and playing disciplined. Chase Brakel would put away a rebound to open the scoring at 15:22 less than 10 seconds in to a powerplay. The Terriers led 1-0 after 20 minutes. It was then hometown boy Jared Roy’s turn as he buried a one timer pass from Ryan Sokoloski on the powerplay for a 2 goal Portage lead. Roy then added his 2nd of the night when he squeaked the eventual game winner 5 hole on Epp. With 6 minutes to go in the second Keevan Daniels Webb would find himself alone on a breakway after picking up the puck coming out of the penalty box. Looking to get OCN on the board, Aiken would stop him cold and the Terriers would carry the 2 goal lead in to the dressing room. Portage found themselves in trouble in the 3rd taking 8 minor penalties with OCN looking to get in the game. Just passed the halfway point of the third Valiquette scored OCN’s first on the powerplay. 4 minutes later Dumont would close the gap to one just as the minor to Martin expired. At 14:59 Mackenzie Dwyer was given a 4 minute penalty for high sticking, but OCN was unable to tie the game. Brock Aiken picked up the win and third star with 24 saves on the night. The Terriers will be back on the ice this Saturday at the PCU centre when they play host to the Swan Valley Stampeders. Currently these two teams each have 2 wins each this season with Swan winning the last 2.
