The Portage Terriers will be represented this year at the Team Canada West Selection Camp for the World Junior A Challenge.
Forward Reilly Funk and Defenceman Owen Murray will join 42 other players from the Western provinces to compete for a spot on Team Canada West’s roster.
“It’s exciting, it feels good to be recognized and be given this opportunity. I’m pumped to get out there and show them what I can do and no matter what, it’s going to be a really cool experience that I’ll remember” – Portage local Reilly Funk
This year’s camp will be held in Calgary from December 3-5, with games and practices being held before the team is named. The 2018 World Junior A Challenge will be held in Bonnyville, Alberta from December 9-16.
Owen Murray will celebrate his 16th birthday just prior to the start of camp and the rookie defenceman says he’s feeling no pressure. “It’s an honor to be selected as one of the 44 top players in Western Canada. I’m excited for the opportunity to represent my country. I plan on sticking to my game and playing with confidence and hopefully leave a good impression on the coaching staff.”
“Both players have had very good starts to the season and it will be exciting for them to experience attending the camp.” Coach and GM Blake Spiller
Funk currently sits 8th overall in points for the league averaging 1.29 points per game. Funk’s size and speed make him a physical presence on the Terriers’ roster.
Murray, the youngest player in the MJHL is a great skater and logs plenty of minutes with the Terriers. The Decker native has scored 5 goals and 13 assists in 25 games.
Funk and Murray will be joined by 3 other MJHL players that will be attending this year’s camp.
