Portage Wins Back to Back to Extend Winning Streak

The Terriers picked up 4 points with back to back games against OCN this weekend at Stride Place. So far the teams have met 4 times this season, the Terriers coming out on top each time.

Meunier opened the scoring for Portage on the powerplay halfway through the period. Despite outshooting the visiting Blizzard 25-5 in the first, it was the lone goal of the frame.

OCN tied the game at one, Mousseau beating Minor from the slot early in the 2nd. Sheldin Howard restored Portage’s lead with his second of the season on the powerplay. Daniels Webb once again tied the game for OCN the beneficiary of the winning draw going post and in on Minor. The teams were tied at 2 heading into the dressing room.

Just shy of 4 minutes into the third Jacob Brown was hauled down in front and awarded a penalty shot. Brown faked the shot and beat Giesbrecht with the backhand restoring Portage’s one goal lead.

For the third straight time OCN tied things up with a goal from Tony Apetagon on the 2 on 1. With the game tied at 3, Portage’s Meunier took a 5 minute match penalty for spitting.

On the penalty kill Jay Buchholz poked the puck past their D and sprung a 2 on 1 with Ty Barnstable. Buchholz drew the defenceman who slid early and sauced the puck to Barnstable who scored shorthanded for the game winner.

OCN was looking for the equalizer, but Portage killed the remainder of the penalty and hemmed them in their own end so they were unable to pull their goalie.

Minor earned the win in net with some key saves backing 24 of 27 shots.

With tonight’s win Portage sits in first with a 6 and 1 record. Next up for the Terriers is a road trip to Steinbach this Wednesday. Game time 7:30 pm.
