Game One Goes to OCN

The Terriers fell 8-3 to OCN in Game one of the MJHL Final in front of a very loud, packed house at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Arena. It was a tough night for the Terriers with OCN’s Tristan Elie scoring just 1:31 seconds in to the first. Valiquette made it 2-0 with 3:34 to go in the first frame. At 18:46 Brady Keeper took a minor for cross checking and the Terriers cashed in on their first powerplay of the game, McIsaac from Dwyer and Brakel. It was Tristan Elie again scoring 1:18 in to the second restoring the 2 goal Blizzard lead. A patient Leipsic crossed the blue line and circled back for an opening to score 5 minutes later. Portage went on a 5 on 3 later in the period, but were unable to score. OCN came back and scored two back to back, Campbell and Dale for a 5-2 Blizzard lead after two. OCN tallied three more in the third with Kuhlman scoring his first MJHL goal from the point, but it was all Blizzard. Chapman records the loss playing the first forty minutes and facing 24 shots. The Terriers went 1 for 5 on the powerplay with OCN going 1 for 3. Game 2 is tomorrow night at 7:00pm. Listen to CFRY to hear Cody call the game.    

The Terriers Punch their Ticket to MJHL Final

Terriers celebrate McIsaac's game winning goal. For the third straight year the Terriers will be playing for the Turnbull Cup. . The Terriers beat the favorited Pistons 2-0 in game 6 last night at Stride Place in front of a packed house. Both teams were off to a slow start with no score after twenty minutes and the Pistons outshooting the Dogs 10-6. Portage started the 2nd period on the penalty kill and Sokoloski picked up the puck coming out of the box and scored on the powerplay. The goal was called back and Sokoloski was assessed another minor for touching the puck without completely exiting the box. At 7:33 James McIsaac buried his first of the post season 5 hole on Bengert that would count for the Terrier lead. Three minutes later, Mickoski found mesh on a rebound and Portage was up by 2. With a 2-0 lead the Terriers played strong in their own end and got pucks deep. Chapman made a big save with just over 3 minutes to go in the third to keep the Terriers momentum. With 1:12 to go in the game, the Pistons called a time out and pulled the goalie for the extra attacker, but Portage shut them down. Chapman picks up the shut-out and his first win of the series making 27 saves. Portage knocked off the first place Pistons in 6 games to advance to the MJHL final against the OCN Blizzard. Portage Falls in Game 5

Purtill scores the winning goal. The MJHL Semifinal will be returning to Stride Place tomorrow night as the Terriers were unable to pull the trigger in game 5 losing to the Pistons 3-2 in regulation. Game 5 started with some jump as both teams came out of the gate ready to play. Portage had all lines firing as they were the first to hit the score board when Chase Brakel pocketed his own rebound, the only marker of the first period. Steinbach evened things up early in the second when Pion scored on a screened Aiken from the point with the man advantage. Chase Brakel regained the Terriers lead scoring from the slot on a Turner Santin pass. It looked like Portage could double their lead as they had a 5 on 3 for more than a minute, but the Pistons did a great job on the penalty kill and the Terriers didn’t register a shot. Once again the Pistons came out early in the third and tied things up when Taraschuk shot one off the glass that hit Aiken in the back of the leg and in the net on the powerplay. Steinbach took their first lead of the night when the Portage missed an opportunity to get the puck out and Purtill buried a backhand high blocker for the eventual game winner. Aiken recorded his first loss in this series with 18 saves. The Terriers host the Pistons in game 6 tomorrow night at Stride Place 7:30pm with a 3-2 lead in the series.  

Portage Picks up Third Straight Win

Sokoloski scores game winner. Portage takes a 3-1 lead in the semifinal series against the Steinbach Pistons last night at Stride Place with their third straight win. Steinbach opened the scoring early when Wyatt Hinson buried a rebound off the boards 4:04 in to the first. Portage was able to even things up just before the period ended when Ty Barnstable tipped home a Ty Enns shot from the point. Steinbach regained their lead early in the second when Pion slid a rebound past Brock Aiken. 4 minutes later Scott Mickoski picked up his second of the post season scoring from the slot on Roman Bengert. Ty Barnstable scored his second of the game on the powerplay for Portage’s first lead of the game and his 9th of the playoffs. A few minutes later defenceman Carter McMurdo picked up a 5 minute match penalty and a game misconduct for a hit from behind and the Terriers went on the penalty kill where they held the Pistons off. Early in the third Sokoloski would win the draw back to Layne Toder who would throw it on net and Sokoloski would tip it past Bengert for a 2 goal Terrier lead and the eventual game winner. With 2:23 to go, Roman Bengert would take the bench for the extra Piston’s attacker. Steinbach was looking to get back in it and Koop was able to get one past Aiken to come within one, but they were unable to tie the game. Aiken picks up his third straight win in net stopping 26 shots. Portage leads the series 3-1 and can close it out on Sunday in Steinbach with a win.

Terriers Steal Game 3 in Steinbach

Takato Cox scores the game winner with 17 seconds left in the game. The Terriers take a 2-1 lead in the best of 7 Semi-final series with the Steinbach Pistons, scoring 2 goals in the last minute and 11 seconds for the comeback win tonight at the T.G.Smith Centre. The game was scoreless after the first twenty minutes, both teams having chances and unable to find the back of the net. The Terriers going 0 for 1 on the powerplay. Steinbach scored the first goal of the game when Brock Aiken mishandled a puck and Drew Anderson fed Braden Purtill for a wide open back door goal 3:36 in to the second. The Pistons 1-0 lead would hold through forty minutes. Ryan Sokoloski tied the game at one finding himself alone in front burying a Josh Martin pass. A packed Steinbach arena got loud when the Pistons took over the lead when Johnson in tight on Aiken found the back of the net. With just over 2 minutes to go in the third, the Terriers called a time out and pulled Aiken with the face off in Steinbach’s end. There was a close call where Carlson missed the empty net before Chase Brakel would win a draw in the offensive zone and Leipsic dropped the puck to Enns who made no mistake tying the game with a wrist shot from the point. With less than 30 seconds to go in the game, The Terriers came down on a 3 on 1 with Hendrix, Thiessen and Cox. Cox carrying the puck down the right side opted to shoot and tucked it under Bengert’s arm. Steinbach pulled Bengert with 17.9 seconds left on the clock, but the Terriers held them off to pick up the win. Aiken with a great game in net picking up his second win of the series making 24 saves. The Terriers host the Pistons this Friday for game 4 of the series. Tickets are now on sale at Stride Place.

Terriers Tie the Series at One

Jordan Bochinski and Riley Thiessen. 90:43 later Portage wins game 2 of this best of 7 Semi-final to tie the series at one with the Steinbach Pistons. Mackenzie Dwyer played hero finding mesh on a Chase Brakel rebound in front of a packed Stride Place 43 seconds in to the third overtime period. The Dog Pound was buzzing this afternoon with all the Roger’s Hometown Hockey festivities. Ron Maclean, Tara Slone, Aaron Asham and his daughter Ocean kicked off game 2 with a formal puck drop. The Pistons struck first with a goal from Braden Purtill on the wrist shot just 6:27 in to the first. Portage was quick to answer with a goal from Carter McMurdo beating Bengert with a point shot. Chase Brakel notched a lead for the Terriers scoring from the slot for a lead after 20 minutes. Layne Toder ripped a shot on net from the point that Barnstable tipped past Bengert for a 2 goal Terriers lead that was short lived as Tyson McConnell buries a wrist shot 30 seconds later. Steinbach was able to tie the game at 3 in the 3rd with Will Koop scoring for the Pistons on the rush. With 14 minutes left in the frame, both goalies played their best and the game remained tied after regulation. The game wouldn’t be decided until the beginning of the 3rd overtime period when Chase Brakel shot a Leipsic pass on net and Mackenzie Dwyer finished off the rebound. Brock Aiken made 39 saves for the win in his first outing this series. The Terriers and Pistons are tied at a game apiece heading into game 3 on Wednesday night at the T.G. Smith Centre in Steinbach.  

Terriers Lose Close One in Steinbach

Ref calls back goal by Sokoloski 5 minutes into the first for kicking it in. Last night marked the first game of the MJHL Semi final series at the T.G Smith Centre in Steinbach where the Pistons came away with the win in a 5-4 final. Portage struck first just past the halfway point of the opening frame when Layne Toder squeaked one past Roman Bengert for the early lead after having a Sokoloski goal called back for kicking it in 5 minutes in. The period ended in a tie as Steinbach’s Hinson evened things up at 16:51. Steinbach came out hard and fast in the second Purtill scoring just under a minute in. Penalty trouble ended up costing the Terriers, receiving 4 minors, the Pistons capitalizing on 2. Tyler Anderson and Bradley Schoonbaert both making the most of the man advantage. Steinbach looked to be running away with things up 4-1 less than 6 minutes in when Ty Barnstable scored a big goal for the dogs on their first powerplay of the game to cut the Piston’s lead to 2. Portages Mackenzie Dwyer found mesh 7:38 into the third to draw within one of the Pistons, but a few minutes later Koop restored Steinbach’s 2 goal lead on a misplayed puck by Chapman on the powerplay. For the second time in the game Barnstable scored a big goal once again bringing the Dogs within one, but despite pulling the goalie Portage was unable to get it done. Chapman records the loss with 33 saves. Game two of the best of seven series will be played tomorrow at Stride Place as a part of  Hometown Hockey which kicked off today. Portage is headed to the Semi Finals

Leipsic cuts in front of the net and buries his shot on the fly. Portage came out looking to finish off the series at home and avoid game 7 in Selkirk and they did just that, beating the Steelers 7-1 and clinching their spot in the MJHL semi-final. Jeremey Leipsic opened the scoring for the Dogs using his speed to beat Selkirk Captain Taylor Fisher down the right side cutting in front of the net to beat Dola on the powerplay. Four minutes later Jared Roy made no mistake with the wide open net off an end board rebound. Selkirk got on the board when Cole McCartan was able to find mesh with the backhand over Kurtis Chapman’s glove and pull within one. Chase Brakel restored the lead burying a rebound at 15:56 and Portage headed in to the dressing room with a 2 goal lead despite being outshot 20-8.                                                       The Terriers started to run away with the game in the second scoring 3 more goals starting just a minute in with Mackenzie Dwyer burying a point shot on a screened Dola. Scott Mickoski scored his first of the post season with a one timer off a Leipsic pass and Ty Barnstable would bang home a rebound for a whopping 5 goal lead on just 16 shots. That would be the end of the night for goaltender Hayden Dola as he was replaced with back up Landon Poiron. Portage notched one more in the 3rd with Mackenzie Dwyer scoring his 2nd of the night for a 7-1 final. Kurtis Chapman picked up his third win of the post season turning away 35 shots and was named 1st star for his effort. The Terriers will now face the Steinbach Pistons in the best of 7 semi-final. The schedule will be announced later today.
