Terriers Captain Tanner Jago announced as CJHL Finalist for 2015 top defenceman award. I caught up with Tanner today in Fort McMurray to ask him about the announcement. ” It’s an honor for now, but the focus remains on the task at hand here in Fort Mac and moving forward to the RBC cup back in Portage. I think it’s very reflective of the season we’ve had as a team as playing with this group of guys has made things pretty easy. We have a very strong D core and no matter what, going out there having trust in your partners and forwards as well makes the world of difference. ”

In what some have called a Cinderella Season for the Portage Terriers, Brad Bowles has been a stand out in his own right. Finishing the season tied for 2nd in points, winning the MVP for the team at the Terriers’ Banquet and being named to the all-star team at the Western Canada Cup, it is no surprise that he’s cleaning up at the RBC Cup too. I asked Brad how it felt to be recognized in such great company. ” It was an unbelievable feeling hearing my name for Top Forward and MVP and having it be in the RBC Cup makes it that much more special. In a tournament like this full of the best in Canada, it’s not something I expected. ” Awards aside, Brad talked about what tonight’s game for the Championship means to him and the team. ” Tonight’s game is obviously the biggest it gets in Junior hockey. It’s gonna be a high pace game and no room for errors. It’s hard to believe we have actually made it to the RBC Cup final, but the job still isn’t done yet. Now we need to dig in for one more game and get it done.” Brad went on to talk about the support the Terriers have had during this Championship run and what it’s meant to the team to have Portage behind them. ” The support we’ve had in this tournament has been unbelievable. It’s been a packed rink for all our games which makes the experience that much better. The atmosphere on the ice has been amazing! ” Pictured here with equally talented identical twin and line mate Shawn Bowles. With the 2015 season coming to an end, it was time for the Terriers to complete trades made earlier in the year. Dane Schoiler traded to the Estevan Bruins to complete the trade for David Robertson. Davis Ross traded to the Virden Oil Capitals to complete the trade for Kevin Pochuk. Ryan Swier traded to OCN Blizzard to complete the trade for Grant Valiquette. The Terriers would like to thank Dane, Davis and Ryan for their time in Portage and wish them luck in their futures.

Yesterday saw the 2015 MJHL Draft come and go and 66 players were chosen between the 11 Organizations. For the 1st time in the league’s history the Draft was televised live on NAC-TV which was also available on MTS TV and Bell TV. The 6 round Draft is the final event that occurs as part of the league’s Annual General Meeting weekend. The Portage Terriers auto protected 2 local boys Reilly Funk (F) and Riley Sveistrup (G) both from the Central Plains Bantam AAA team. In the first round 11th overall the Terriers chose Duncan Pierce, a forward from the Winnipeg Hawks. Frank Harding Head Scout for the Portage Terriers thought that Pierce was the best player available as their first pick. “Pierce is a real leader in the dressing room. He’s a big boy with a bit of a mean streak that finishes all his checks. He’s a solid 2 way player with a great centre ice game. “ The Terriers went with Zachary Falck in the 2nd round 13th overall, a forward from the Winnipeg Monarchs. Harding thought Falck was a great addition. “He’s a goal scorer. He’s of smaller size, but he plays hard and has a tremendous offensive game. “ The Terriers traded their 3rd round pick to the Steinbach Pistons. In the 4th round 44th overall, the Terriers picked up Layne Toder out of Elkhorn Manitoba. Toder was also drafted by the Calgary Hitmen in the WHL Draft. Toder is a defenceman that attended the Terriers Spring Camp and did well. He’s a defensive player that is very skilled with the puck. He sees the ice well and can carry the puck out of his own end. Portage went with a goaltender out of Winnipeg for the 5th round and 55th overall pick, Brendan Benoit. Benoit is also a WHL prospect chosen in the 10th round by the Brandon Wheat Kings. Harding says Benoit is a small goalie, but technically sound. “He plays his angles extremely well, he’s quick and in my opinion one of the top 2 goalies in Manitoba in this age group. “ Portage had the last pick of the draft in the 6th round 66th overall and went with Evan Gullett from the Parkland Rangers. Head Scout Harding attended the Parkland Camp and noticed the defenceman. “Gullett has a lot of potential and I believe him to be a kid that will put the work in. He’s a good skater and is solid defensively. “
