The Portage Terriers scored early and often on Wednesday night as they beat the Winnipeg Blues 6-2. It was the Terriers’ fourth win in a row and ninth in their last 10.
The first period started with a bang with three goals in the first four minutes. Edward Knittig crashed into the offensive zone and opened the scoring 17 seconds into the game for Portage. It didn’t take long for the Blues to respond with a goal from Carson White. Portage regained the lead when Will McKay scored his first of the night, tipping home a point shot. After some penalties in the the middle of the period, Winnipeg tied the game with less than five minutes to go when Campbell Epp split the Terrier defence and put a backhand past Donovan Bodnar. 2-2 after the first.
The game started to shift in the Terriers’ favour in the second period as they controlled the shot department. Midway through the frame Drayden Uhrina knocked home a pass from Rhett Platt at the side of the net on the power play, which turned out to be the game winner. With the assist, Rhett Platt now has points in 14 games in a row. It’s the longest point streak in the MJHL this season. Edward Knittig gave the Terriers a two goal lead late in the period with a beautiful one-timer over the shoulder of Winnipeg goalie Mason Burkes.
Will McKay extended the Portage lead early in the third period, and Owen Witt put it out of reach with his seventh of the season. Bodnar shut it down the rest of the way, stopping 31 shots in total. The Terriers’ penalty kill was strong, going a perfect 7/7.
The Terriers are back in action on Saturday night in Swan Valley to play the Stampeders. Puck drop is at 7pm.
