Terriers Open 2025 Right

Story courtesy Jared Thiessen (portageonline.com)

The Portage Terriers picked up where they left off in 2024 with a 5-1 win over the Winnipeg Freeze.

Wyatt Dreger found a puck sitting in some open ice after a scramble in front, and put away Portage’s first goal in 2025 midway through the first.

He outlines his thoughts on scoring that marker.

“It feels really good, actually. Hopefully more will come.”

That was the only shot to find the scoreboard, as Portage led Winnipeg 1-0 through 20 minutes. Portage outshot Winnipeg 12-4 in the frame.

A scoreless second period would see Portage put 28 shots to the net, with Freeze netminder Ben Chornomydz making several outstanding saves to keep it a one-goal game.

Winnipeg would score a goal early in the third period to knot the score at one, but that seemed to only motivate the Terriers more.

Caleb Lepitre would score, followed by a pair of goals by the Nenow-Bullinger-McKay line, and Dawson Madden would round out the scoring to finish the game with a 5-1 score. The Dogs outshot Winnipeg 64-20 in the game.

McKay notes that they just need to keep working to get better when they’re in practice.

“Just listen to Spills, he knows best. Focus up before practice, dial in with the passes, and keep buzzing.”

The Terriers are back on the road Tuesday night in Selkirk against the Steelers.
