The Portage Terriers put together one of their best efforts of the season into a 5-2 win over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines on Friday night.
Koy Funk would set off the Teddy Bear Toss 53 seconds into the game with a tough shot to handle from near the front of the net.
The goal sent 353 teddy bears onto the ice, and the U13 Central Plains Capitals would help clear the ice surface so play could resume.
Waywayseecappo would respond with a short-handed goal as Portage turned over the puck at their blueline. A drive to the front of the net would see Terrier goalie Mitchell Kathler stretch out for the puck, but unable to reach it. 1-1 was the score after 20 minutes.
Portage would regain the lead as William McKay put home a rebound for his second of the season to make it 2-1 just over halfway through the second period. But Waywayseecappo would score on a powerplay just over two minutes later to once again knot the score.
Parker Scherr would add his second of the season firing a point shot off the post and in on the powerplay, making it 3-2 for Portage after two.
In the third period, Owen Witt scored on a two-on-one with Cameron Bullinger to make it 4-2.
Witt says it felt good to be back in the lineup and that he had a good feeling on the two-on-one.
“It felt great. I knew Bulli (Bullinger) was gonna look my way so I was pretty happy about it, but it just feels nice to get the win too.”
Scott Cousins would tap home his sixth of the season to end the game 5-2.
William McKay was named the Popeyes Player of the Game and says they just need to keep doing what they’re doing to start another win streak.
“We’ve just got to keep rolling, we can’t give them any good looks, keep our momentum alive and pound them tomorrow.”
The Dogs return to action on Saturday night when they make the trip to Waywayseecappo to finish the home-and-home series with the Wolverines. Puck drop is at 7:30 with the Hi-tec Industries Pregame Show on CFRY at 7:20 p.m.
