PORTAGE, October 15, 2025 – The Portage Terriers struggled against the Steinbach Pistons on Wednesday night, getting blown out 7-1 on home ice.
The Pistons jumped out of the gate with a lot of pressure, but Terrier goalie Ryan Velan made numerous highlight reel saves to keep his team in the game. As the period wound down, Rhett Platt sprung Trevor Hill on a break away and he opened the scoring with five seconds left. Despite getting outshot 14-5, the Terriers had a 1-0 lead after the first.
Portage started the second period with a power play but were unable to capitalize. Nine seconds after the penalty expired, Liam Doyle got Steinbach on the board, and the wheels fell off for Portage. The Pistons then scored three straight goals to close out the period, with two of them on the power play. They outshot Portage 17-8 and had a 4-1 lead heading into the third period.
The speed of the Pistons couldn’t be matched by the Terriers in the third period and Steinbach added three more goals. Frustrations boiled over midway through the frame with a multi player mele resulting in multiple fighting majors and a total of 248 penalty minutes being handed out.
Steinbach finished the game going 2/10 on the power play, while the Terriers were 0/2. Velan was busy for Portage, facing 43 shots.
The Terriers now have two days off before heading up North to play Swan Valley on Saturday. Their next home game is on Sunday against the Winnipeg Blues.
