Terriers Win First Game At Showcase

Story courtesy portageonline.com

The Portage Terriers were victorious in their first matchup at the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Showcase Monday afternoon. The Dogs defeated the OCN Blizzard 3-0 in their first meeting with the squad this season.

The scoring began early in the first as Daron Cyr had the puck behind the net and dished it to one of the new additions to the Terriers roster Nathan Flodell. He put home the one-timer, in tight, and gave the Dogs a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. Portage held this one-goal lead into the second period.

With a little over five minutes gone in frame number two and on the power play, Brenden Holba ripped a shot from the slot that beat Steven Bacovsky to build the Terriers lead to 2-0.

Late in the period, Aiden Sotas took a shot immediately after the faceoff. The puck took an odd bounce off a skate and went over the goalie’s shoulder, putting the Terriers up three. The Dogs held onto this lead for the remaining 26 minutes of action to secure the 3-0 victory and help Jayden Catellier pick up his first shutout in the MJHL.

Logan Calder picked up the assist on the second goal of the game to extend his point streak to a league leading 11 games in a row. The Terriers finished the night 1/6 with the man advantage.

The Terriers will play their second game of the Showcase at 10:30 Wednesday morning as they take on the Neepawa Titans at Stride Place.
