Terriers Shutout Blues On Home Ice

Gavin Renwick picked up his second shutout in a row as the Portage Terriers blanked the Winnipeg Blues 2-0 on Wednesday night. Portage looked in control throughout the game outshooting the Blues 37-18.

Alyandro De Leon opened the scoring for Portage early in the first period. Ryley Cyca then scored his first as a Terrier five minutes later.

“It felt great. I got the pass right in the slot and buried it,” says Cyca. “I think we are a tight group defensively. We had some slip ups but pulled off the shutout because of Renwick.”

The Terriers poured on the pressure in the second and third period, including multiple breakaways, but the strong play at the other end of the ice by Winnipeg goalie River Leslie-Toogood kept it close.

The Terriers went a perfect 4/4 on the penalty kill and 0/1 with the power play. They will head to Niverville for their next game on Friday night.

Before the game the Terriers recognized defenceman Parker Scherr as the MBLL Player of the Month for October.

“It feels great! It’s a bonus to get some recognition for the points and playing well. Obviously the last couple games we have improved lots as a team and we want to keep that going,” says Scherr. He had nine points in 11 games and is currently one of six players on the team with at least double digits in points.

“We have that depth. As the season goes on it will get more and more important. No team can take us lightly. For us we need to make sure we’re getting better every day.”
