The Portage Terriers picked up their second win of the season on Sunday night, beating the Winnipeg Freeze 6-2.
The Terriers emphatically ended their streak of allowing the first goal of the game as Gabriel Laflamme opened the scoring 18 seconds after opening puck drop. They didn’t let off the gas throughout the first period outshooting the Freeze 12-7. Slade Stanick scored midway through the period, and then Parker Korman added one with time winding down. 3-0 Portage after 1.
Early in the second period Stanick set up Owen Witt for his second of the night to make it 4-0 Portage. The Freeze finally got on the board when Kylow Monkman beat Terrier netminder Jayden Catellier unassisted. Portage out shot them 17-9 but couldn’t add another goal. 4-1 Terriers after 2.
Winnipeg started to show some signs of life early in the third period when Monkman scored his second of the night to make it a two goal game. The Terriers put their foot back on the gas and scored up two more goals to put it out of reach. Laflamme ended the night with two goals and an assist and Stanick finished with two goals and two assists.
“It’s great. We really wanted to come out with the two points,” says Stanick. He was paired for the first time with Laflamme and Alyandro De Leon. “I think our play styles match each other really well. We want to keep it rolling.”
The Terriers will return to the ice Friday night when they host the Winkler Flyers at Stride Place at 7:30pm.
