The Portage Terriers’ offense came alive Friday night as they beat the Winnipeg Monarchs 7-2 on home ice.
The game started relatively even, with Monarch forward Carter Haney opening the scoring 6:50 into the first period. Two back to back penalties to the Monarchs turned the tide in the Terrier’s favour. Hunter Kapen scored his first as a Terrier on the 5 on 3 power play and then Hunter Dingman scored off the rush 14 seconds later also with the man advantage to make it 2-1 Portage. A few minutes later Ben Bugeaud was left alone in the slot and he scored his 7th of the season for the Terriers. Before the period was out Justin Poudrette scored another for Winnipeg to make it 3-2 heading into the intermission.
The Terriers took control in the second period and never looked back. Rhett Perrin scored short handed early in the period, and then Justin Deschene added another halfway through. 5-2 Portage after 2.
Justin Deschenes continued to pour on the pressure in the third and scored a beautiful goal in the slot. Olivier Tetreault blasted home his first of the season four minutes later to put the game out of reach.
Portage finished 2/5 on the power play and a perfect 2/2 on the penalty kill. Mitch Kathler stopped 27 shots for his 5th win of the season. The Terriers will rest on Saturday before heading up to Dauphin for a matchup with the Kings on Sunday at 4pm.
