Terriers Drop The Blues In Overtime

The Portage Terriers picked up their 5th win in a row Friday night, beating the Winnipeg Blues 3-2 in overtime. Portage had no shortage of opportunities outshooting the Blues 44-27, but ran into some great goaltending from Brock Moroz.

The Terriers got into some penalty trouble early with Kaden Kohle going to the box 16 seconds into the game, and Kian Calder two minutes later. After killing off the penalties, Portage got on the board when Hayden Lacquette’s point shot found it’s way through traffic. Winnipeg responded with a point shot of their own five minutes later that beat Terrier goalie Jayden Catellier. Portage outshot Winnipeg 17-7 in the first. 1-1 after 1.

The second period saw Winnipeg take their first lead of the night. Kai Elkie chipped in a shot off the rush. Before the period was out Brandon Funk tied the game finishing off a rebound in front of the net.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the third period. Portage had a 5 on 3 power play with less than two minutes to go but couldn’t solve Moroz. The Terriers finished the night 0/7 on the power play. The Blues then got a power play to close out the third period and start overtime. Once the game got back to 3 on 3 Lacquette struck again. He snuck behind a defender and scored a beautiful between the legs goal to win the game.

They remain first in the standings, and now get ready to play the Steinbach Pistons on Sunday for the first time this season. Portage is two points ahead of Steinbach in the standings, but have played one more game.
