Terriers Fall To Oil Capitals

The Portage Terriers dropped a Thanksgiving weekend matinee to the Virden Oil Capitals 4-1 at Stride Place.

The teams traded chances through the first part of the first period. Terrier goalie Mitch Kathler had nice glove save to keep the Oil Capitals off the scoresheet, but after 8 shots Virden was the first team to find the back of the net. The Terriers responded late in the period when Lucas Bailey went top shelf to beat Micky Gross for the Terriers’ first goal. 1-1 after 1.

In the second frame both the Terriers and the Oil Caps were unsuccessful in the goal category as Kathler continued his strong performance for the Terriers stopping all 9 of the shots he faced.

The game opened up for Virden in the third period when they scored 3 goals in under four minutes. Carson Wright had a bobbled puck find its way through everyone and sneak past Kathler. The Oil Capitals then got breakaway goals from Tyson Draper and Liam Goertzen. Gross stopped all the shots he faced in the second and third periods to help Virden to their 7th consecutive win.

Portage will now get ready for a Wednesday game against the national champion Niverville Nighthawks at 7:30pm.
