Terriers Need Shootout Against Steelers

Story Courtesy Adam Vanstone

The Portage Terriers lost in a heartbreaking shootout to the Selkirk Steelers 3-2 on Sunday night.

The Terriers sent 20 shots on net in the first period but they were unable to beat Steeler goalie Stefan Kostin. On the other side of the ice the Steelers managed 10 shots but starting goaltender Mitch Kathler stopped them all to keep it 0-0 after 1.

The second period was pretty similar to the first other than Nathan Tews scoring for the Steelers giving them a 1-0 lead going into the third period.

Quickly into the third period, Selkirk found themselves another goal which gave them a 2 goal lead. It wasn’t until the Terrier’s 52nd shot with 51 seconds left that Hunter Dingman could finally beat Kostin, scoring the first Portage goal of the game. The Terriers weren’t done yet as with 7 seconds left, the Terriers found the tying goal to bring the game into overtime courtesy of Justin Deschenes.

In overtime the Terriers controlled the pace with chance after chance but were unable to find the back of the net, resulting in a 7-round shootout. Steelers’ forward Cole Babych played the hero, getting the final goal of the night.

The Terriers are back in action Friday night in Steinbach at the Southeast Event Centre. They look to finally snap their 5-game losing streak.
