Portage Makes a Comeback for the Win Against Winkler

The Terriers fought back in the third to beat Winkler in their first meeting of the year and their third straight win.

Reilly Funk opened the scoring late in the first period beating Winkler’s Brunn for his 2nd of the season.

Portage struggled in the second getting the puck out of their own zone and Winkler capitalized. McCarthy and Checco both scoring to give the Flyers a one goal advantage heading in to the 3rd.

Just over a minute in the 3rd, Wiestblatt picked up a minor for roughing.  A relentless Barnstable on the penalty kill caused a turnover in Winkler’s end and Buchholz tied the game with a shorthanded goal.

Portage killed off another penalty before scoring the game winner on the powerplay. Newcomer Roger passed back to the point where Van Deynze nailed the one timer.

Winkler pulled their goalie with a minute to go, but were unable to tie things up.

Minor picked up his second win with a solid performance in net making 27 saves and was named 3rd star.

Next up for Portage is back to back games this Friday and Saturday against a visiting OCN. We will be collecting Koats for Kids at this Friday’s game. Puck drop 7:30pm.
