A tough start and some costly turnovers led to a 3-1 loss to the Selkirk Steelers on Sunday night.
The Terriers have been struggling to start games well and have let in the first goal in 6 of the last 9 contests. A turnover at the Terrier blueline led to Selkirk Steelers’ forward Ian Lavallee being left alone in front of the net and he beat Ryan Velan to open the scoring. The Terriers would show some life late in the period when Adam Belzil slipped it five hole to score his 9th of the season tying the game at 1.
Portage started to get opportunities in the second period, but three separate penalties derailed momentum. Luke McCarthy scored on a 2 on 1 for the Steelers to give them the 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
Selkirk goalie Noel Olsonawski played well in the third period as he faced a barrage of shots. Portage out chanced Selkirk 24-6. Rohan Guevarra put the final nail in the coffin for the Steelers as he finished off a perfect 2 on 0 breakaway to make it 3-1.
The Terriers have now lost three in a row and will get all week to rest up for a home and home series with the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. The Terriers will be holding their annual Teddy Bear Toss on Friday Nov. 29 for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Hampers. Fans are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped stuffed animal and throw it on the ice when the Terriers score their first goal.
