The Portage Terriers were in Winnipeg yesterday to participate in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League Bantam Draft. The Terriers added 7 prospects to the organization including two auto protects. “We did a lot of work to prepare for the draft and are pleased with the mix of players that we added to the fold. We added some players of substance and two of the top forwards in the province.” said Terriers Head Scout Frank Harding. The Terriers Organization is pleased to welcome these young players to the Terriers family and look forward to having them at Main Camp. Below is a breakdown of yesterday’s draft. Including the auto protect prospects. In total the Terriers selected 3 forwards, 3 defenseman and a goaltender.
Colleen Vrooman of the Portage Terriers Ladies Auxiliary presenting Chase Brakel with the Joe Sponarski Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Playoff Performance. In his second season with the Portage Terriers, Assistant Captain Chase Brakel named Playoff MVP and awarded the Joe Sponsarski Memorial Trophy for Outstanding Playoff Performance. Chase was an integral part of this years championship team. The 5th place Portage went on to beat the 4th place Selkirk Steelers, the first place Steinbach Pistons and the 3rd place OCN Blizzard on their way to their third Turnbull Cup in as many seasons. Brakel notched 8 goals and 8 assists in 18 games including the game winning goals in game 5 and 6 of the final round. The veteran forward also received 3 out of 4 Player of the Game honors in the Western Canada Cup in Penticton in May. "A lot of guys stepped it up in the playoffs so the award could have gone to a few different guys and I am honoured that I was picked. I look forward to returning to Portage next season." -Chase Brakel
Barnstable takes the game opening face off. The Terriers season came to an end tonight in a 5-3 loss to the Penticton Vees. Portage needed one point to advance to the playoff, but were unable to get it done against to host team. The Vees were first to score at 11:14 of the first with Taylor Ward going 5 hole. Portage was quick to tie the game at 12:20 when Brakel got a lucky bounce off the glass to beat Robson. Dwyer scored the go ahead just over a minute later on a pass from Leipsic. The Vees tied the game 1:09 in to the 2nd when Kruickshank scored on Portage turnover. Kruickshank scored his second of the game on the powerplay beating Chapman with a one timer five hole. Brakel scored a tying goal that was disallowed after the officials assessed goalie contact watching the play on the replay on the jumbotron. Brakel struck again scoring top corner beating Robson short side for his second of the game for a 3-3 tie after 2 periods of play. The first half of the third was scoreless. Former Terrier Taylor Sanheim scored a controversial game winning goal, which could have been arguably called goalie interference as well at 12:29 of the third. Portage puled their goalie with a minute and a half left and Duncan Campbell buried the empty netter to put the game out of reach. Chapman faced 31 shots in the loss and the Terriers went 0/3 on the powerplay while Penticton went 1/5.
Bandits score 3 powerplay goals on their way to a 5-0 win. The Terriers faced the Brooks Bandits in their 3rd game of the WCC round robin tonight in Penticton. The first period was fast paced with both teams creating chances. Brooks’ Mappin scored first after they intercepted a clearing pass by the Terriers. Both teams failed to score on their first powerplays of the game, Thiessen blocking multiple shots in front. Prkusic added to the Brooks’ lead scoring a shorthanded goal walking in and going glove side on a screened Aiken. Shots on goal after 20 minutes were 10-9 Brooks. The Terriers ran in to penalty trouble in the second giving up 4 powerplays with one of them a 5 on 3. Brooks capitalized on 3 of those, Jean and Makar x 2 for a 5 goal Bandit lead outshooting the dogs 19-4. The final frame was back and forth with neither team capitalizing. Brock Aiken records the loss facing 43 shots for a tough night. Portage’s last game of the round robin is tomorrow night against the host team the Penticton vees, game time 9:00pm.
The Terriers fell in game 2 on the WCC to the Chilliwack Chiefs. Both teams were tentative in the first feeling each other out and only registering 11 shots total. The Chiefs were first on the board with a goal from Lee on a 2 on 1 at 5:08. Portage’s McIsaac would tie the game on the rush at 12:18 with assists from Brakel and Leipsic. At 17:08 Chilliwack’s Kawaguchi scored a shorthanded marker at 17:08 going top shelf on a 2 on 1. The Terriers fought back in the third with chances that they were unable to capitalize on. Portage pulled Chapman with less than a minute left, but couldn’t find the tying marker. The final shots on goal were 28-19 for the Terriers, with neither team scoring on the powerplay. The Terriers have tomorrow off and face the Brooks Bandits Wednesday at 9:00 CST.
